Not all Battery Chargers are Alike
As a powersports dealer, you should be aware of the increasing number of new types of batteries you stock and sell. The new types of batteries introduced in recent years offer some significant improvements over previous types, but their upgraded technical design has probably rendered your current charging equipment obsolete. Today's "MF" sealed batteries, are mostly of AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) construction incorporating Gas Recombinant Technology (GRT), either "dry-charged" requiring dealer filling using a special acid pack, or the more recent "wet" type, factory-filled & sealed. Very recently, engine start batteries of GEL-electrolyte (gel-cell) construction are also being offered. These various modern batteries, especially the GEL types, require more advanced charging programs than the older types with filler caps. Once deeply discharged, they are significantly more difficult to recharge. Few of the shop chargers presently available address these differences. If you do not have a charger suitable for all the diverse modern battery types, you may be throwing away potentially serviceable batteries and the profits lost when you install a new one in your used vehicle inventory. Various consumer chargers advertise "smart" technology, but most of these merely prevent overcharging and provide maintenance of conventional wet cell batteries. The "float" voltage settings of more than one widely distributed "smart" consumer charger are TOO LOW to adequately maintain some of the modern sealed batteries which require a float voltage of at least 13,6V (- 4mV per cell /°C+) according to the battery manufacturers.
TecMate, the most widely endorsed manufacturer of shop test equipment in Europe, originally developed chargers specifically for Honda Motor Europe to meet these battery needs some years ago. Their line of shop and consumer chargers is among the most advanced available today, a fact recognized by most of the major motorcycle O.E.M.'s globally. Motion Pro is proud to offer the "shop" chargers to the powersports industry in North America.
The BatteryMate is an all in one battery load tester & powerful constant current charger with automatically diagnosing desulfater. There are selections for six different battery capacity ranges. The automatically-desulfating charger offers two different charging programs for conventional filler cap batteries and for sealed batteries, which (quoting manufacturers) require a first "commissioning" charge to a higher voltage cut-off level than for filler cap types to ensure optimal saturation and achievement of their real service life potential. The load tester simulates the high current load of the starter motor, the only "real life" and immediate method of determining serviceability & a test all batteries should pass before returning to service.
The OptiMate Pro 8 offers a multi-step automatic diagnostic, desulfating, charging and verifying program independently on 8 individual charging stations. The diagnostic test for sulfation automatically engages a special high voltage desulfating & recovery program when necessary. The multi-step constant current / constant voltage charging algorithm is suitable for charging overnight & maintaining (for months if necessary) all types of filler cap or modern sealed batteries including GEL-electrolyte types. The program also incorporates verification steps that (1) ensure an adequately charged battery, by doubling back and "doing it again" if found necessary, & (2) identify batteries that are accepting a surface charge but will self-discharge to an unacceptable level during use. Both the OptiMate Pro 8 and the BatteryMate are designed for use with all 12-volt lead-acid battery types in use today. Among others, Yamaha U.S.A. & Canada and Honda & Suzuki Canada, endorse BatteryMate while American Suzuki endorses the OptiMate Pro 8.
